" We forget our pleasures, we remember our sufferings. "

I remember the time when my mother scolded me. I mean I can count the many times my parents scolded me or grounded me. But I can hardly count the many times they were there with me no matter what. The time when people didn't believe in me and they did. I remember when I fell off a tree and got a fracture in my right leg. But the love and support I got after that from all my well wishers is a bit blurry in my memory. Oh I remember my first break up too but I fail to remember my first kiss.

Human brain is more likely to remember traumatic or saddening memories with comparatively less efforts than it takes to remember good memories. However, let's not fall in the scientific section for this one. I think it's more romantic to be sad than to be happy. Humans are social species, and getting loved and accepted by people is our primary need. Even if we don't feel it, it's there. There can be two reasons why sufferings are remembered more:

1. Because it is related in some or the other ways with our connection with one or more humans. For eg. If one goes through a break-up it ends a connection with someone very close or if you loose your job then it's related to breakage in connection with your colleagues as well as degradation in lifestyle of you and your family.

2. We see in movies or in books that the good man suffers a lot, fights so many problems, is always right and finally comes out as hero. Everybody wants to be a hero. So our first reaction is that we're right and the other person is wrong. If we don't fight that primary reaction then our brain will take us to the journey of a hero facing one of his problems.

Whether its one of these reasons or some circus going on in our neurons. We must stop our primary reaction and develop critical thinking to evaluate our action or reaction. If we do that, it'll help us overcome the narcissistic ride that our brain takes us on.

Apart from that, remembering suffering can lead to many mental disorders, sometimes trauma or may be just a bad mood. To overcome that one must practice meditation and positive thinking. To count one's blessings everyday is essential. To understand that we're surrounded by miracles and that we ourselves are one. To accept that and to nurture a positive mindset would make us and those who surround us, happy. That's all that we want right? That's what we keep searching for. Happiness might just be in our backyard. Let's find it. Let's practice critical thinking and positive mindset. Then we'll be happy in any situation that we're in. Then we'll be truly happy. Truly content.
